Anyone who has gone on an African safari has heard of the “Big 5”. Initially created by hunters to describe the five most difficult creatures to stalk on foot,the term was adopted over time by safari operators for promotional purposes.
While the intent behind the Big 5 has changed, the five animals represented still evoke excitement for anyone who is on an African safari. This list covers the five classics, but other animals may include cheetahs, gorillas, crocodiles, hippos, giraffes and zebras. The Big Five are:
