After decades of Nazi and Soviet rule, it seems Poland has finally arisen. The largest of the former Eastern European states, Poland's vast countryside is characterized by ancient cities and numerous parks; in summer it seems the whole country heads to the lakes of Masuria or the Baltic Sea beaches. Medieval Krakow's copious churches and impressive mix of architecture escaped destruction in WWII; although Warsaw wasn't so lucky, its historic centre has today been completely rebuilt and the city becomes more cosmopolitan daily. Many find Poland a travel gem: back on its feet (it joined the EU in 2004), stuffed with history, authentic, cheap for Europe yet off the beaten path. You can even ski - just don't expect state of the art equipment!
