Earth Month at G Adventures

Each year, our tour groups, stores and offices around the world participate in a number of initiatives to promote the preservation and conservation of our planet’s resources. This year we are celebrating the International Year of Forests along with the UN.

We've been promoting the many benefits of sustainable travel for years; however, in 2011, G Adventures and Planeterra are ‘going out on a limb’ in order to highlight our responsibility to forests worldwide. Together, we subscribe to the notion that people who will not sustain their forests will soon live in a world that will not sustain people. This Earth Month we ask you to look forests in a new light, and we invite you to learn about projects we support and how you can get involved.

Check out our ‘Forest Facts’—where we outline the ‘Good’, the ‘Bad’ and the ‘Ugly’.

Brazil Community Reforestation

Our Brazil Community Reforestation Program focuses on three central areas—agricultural production, nutrition and conservation. Planeterra enables people from local communities to earn an income from managing forests sustainably. Learn more about the project or donate now

Together, G Adventures and Planeterra are focusing our efforts on reforestation in Brazil—where some of the world’s most important forest resources have been rapidly declining. Our goal this Earth Month is to raise $5,000 for our Brazil Community Reforestation Program. This program, which has resulted in the planting of more than 450,000 trees, provides the communities with access to training workshops and seedlings to encourage the creation of natural barriers and increase food production by providing fodder for livestock and other animals.

If we can keep pace with our target —

  • In our first week, we’ll raise enough to plant 12,500 trees.
  • In our second week, we’ll raise enough to distribute 41,250 seeds to Brazilian farmers.
  • In our third week, we’ll raise enough for 14 onsite visits to provide community training.
  • In our fourth week, we’ll raise enough for 1.8km of ‘live’ fencing to protect habitat.

So, let’s raise $1,250 every week this Earth Month!

Our area of focus is Brazil’s Atlantic Rainforests. Beginning with sugarcane plantations and later, coffee plantations, this region has experienced a loss of habitat for hundreds of years. Now, with the ever-increasing expansion of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, the Atlantic Forest is facing severe pressure from urbanization.

Did You Know?

  • The Atlantic Rainforest is in far worse shape than its better-known cousin. Approximately 20% of the Amazon Rainforest has been deforested—but over 93% of the Atlantic Rainforest has disappeared—and with it the creatures that make it their home.
  • Nearly 70% of the vertebrate species classified as endangered in Brazil are found in the Atlantic Rainforest.
  • When rainforest is cleared and intensively farmed, soil rapidly loses its fertility—often within 20 years or less—after which a farmer is forced to clear more land to maintain income.
  • The Atlantic Forest of tropical South America boasts 20,000 plant species—40% of which are endemic.
