Skydivers raise more than $20,000 for charity

10 Jul 2007

July 10, 2007 – 40 brave thrill seekers took the leap of a lifetime this past weekend, throwing themselves out of perfectly good airplanes, all in the name of charity.

G Adventures 4th annual skydive for charity raised more than $20,000 to benefit Planeterra, its non-profit foundation. Planeterra is dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of people and communities around the world through support of international charities, local organizations and community projects in the places G Adventures’ travellers visit while on tour.

G Adventures covered the jump fees for all participants and in return, skydivers raised money for Planeterra. The participants received ground training, followed by a barbecue, bonfire and camping. Generous sponsorship was provided by Y108 Radio / AM900 CHML which broadcasted from the skydive, M&M Meats and Coca Cola that supplied a great barbecue, as well as Mill Street Brewery and Hydra Vodka Water that were post party sponsors.

“We surpassed our goals with a 33% increase in donations this year. All participants are to be congratulated for making this event so successful," said Elinor Schwob, Development & Events Coordinator. “Special mention goes to our top fundraiser Steve Pugh who raised the most funds for Planeterra and has been awarded a trip to Peru, courtesy of G Adventures. Our appreciation also goes to the fabulous Skydive SWOOP staff for a safe and fun day.”

“At the skydive, the training and preparation before the jump was superb. I felt well equipped for the challenge. There was a sense of community and support from others,” said Gary Warren, who celebrated his 60th birthday by skydiving.

“There is a good fit between the challenge of skydiving and raising money for Planeterra projects. You need dedicated volunteers, people with passion and big hearts, and folks who are willing to take those risks.”

Funds raised from this event will go towards the international charities and local projects which Planeterra supports. One such project is Wells of Hope, a Canadian charitable organization that works to improve the lives of people in rural Guatemala by providing access to clean water through drilling wells. In addition, the organization and its volunteers develop water irrigation systems, build schools, teach English, offer sewing classes to women as well as provide medical and dental assistance to those in need.
