Make a Positive Impact
Any tourism coming into a region can have a strong effect on local communities. The challenge is to ensure that the impact we have is positive, and helpful to the communities we are visiting. Keep in mind that your tourism dollars can change lives for the better if they are spent wisely!
Tourism should never exploit or disrespect local cultures; if you are looking for a Westernized experience, you should re-consider travel to exotic locations. When travelling with a tour operator, research their organization to ensure that they contribute to the wellbeing of the local community, through initiatives like health care, skills training, and resource development.
Tourism can have a tremendous impact on the environment. People can trample plant-life and animal habitats, native species can be frightened away from habitats, car and plane emissions pollute the air, litter can accumulate, and development of tourism facilities can de-beautify natural areas. Find tour operators that that tread lightly on the earth, visit eco-friendly facilities, have smaller group sizes, and support environmental conservation and restoration projects.
The most memorable vacation experiences are not spent visiting busy tourist-traps; they are those out-of-the-way local experiences that engage you with the culture you are visiting. Spending your money by supporting a locally owned and operated tourism facility, craft-collective, local guide, or accommodation, will ensure that your money is supporting local communities and going where it is truly needed.
How You Can Help
For many, travelling abroad opens our eyes to a world that is very different from our own and inspires us to help make a difference in the lives of people and communities that we have visited. Whether you have recently returned home from travelling, or you just genuinely wish to help make a difference in the world around you, you can help by making a contribution to Planeterra, the non-profit founded by G Adventures in 2003.
Donate Now
By donating to the Planeterra Foundation, you will be helping to make a difference in the lives of people and communities around the world. G Adventures matches all individual donations so that 100% of your donation will be doubled and support the Planeterra project of your choice.
To make a donation please Donate Now.
Dollar-a-Day Program
This simple program provides all our travellers with the opportunity to donate one dollar, euro, or pound per day for the duration of your travels with G Adventures. 100% of all proceeds will go towards supporting Planeterra projects. To participate in this program please click the Dollar-A-Day checkbox when booking you tour online, or advise your travel agent at the time of booking.
Visit our Planeterra Projects
Many of our tours visit Planeterra projects. They are marked in our brochure and on our trip details on our website. Additionally, you can consider taking a Volunteer tour for a more-lasting positive impact.
Fundraising Events
Throughout the year, the Planeterra Foundation organizes fundraising events to meet the needs of our projects. A listing of events is provided on the Planeterra website. In recent years our travellers, friends and staff have also reacted quickly to raise more than $40,000 for the families of tsunami victims in Southeast Asia and more than $130,000 for earthquake survivors in Peru!
Plant A Tree
Plant 10 Trees for only $1 and help lessen your impact on climate change and the environment. We have partnered with Trees for the Future to carry out reforestation programs, and we are currently planting indigenous species in Brazil. To participate in this program please click the Plant Trees in the Rainforest checkbox when booking you tour online, or advise your travel agent at the time of booking.
