Get hip in Gweta

While many pass through the quirky town of Gweta on their way to the Makgadikgadi Pans, the town's unique mix of kitsch and class often proves to be a highlight of Botswana journeys.
Gweta may offer a small number of destinations, yet each stop often provides a larger-than-life experience. The Maano supermarket triples as a restaurant and arms and ammunition dealer, providing shoppers with one of the most multidimensional supermarket experiences they are likely to ever have.
If Maano's attached restaurant menu isn't fitting one's fancy, however, guests can always head to the all-inclusive fuel station in town, where local dishes like goat's liver and plates of beef are served up throughout the day.
Those in need of some refreshment can head to Planet Baobab, whose open-air bar features cowhide-covered stools and surprisingly classy green beer bottle chandeliers. Travelers who find themselves enjoying their stay can pitch a tent under a nearby tree on the premises, or rent a grass or mud hut created in a similar style to the heritage homes of indigenous Botswanans.
