Say 'ah' at Engaruka

Upon first glance, the ruins of Engaruka may appear to passersby as nothing more than a large pile of stones. However, with further investigation, the relic structures exude the remains of one of Tanzania's most enigmatic historical wonders.
Although the closest living cultural group is the Masai, the time that the structures have been dated with shows that it is likely a relic of the Iraqw people. The elements are said to be partially to blame for Engaruka's demise, however, oral history from the Iraqw states that the tribe was at war during the time as well.
Found near the base of the Great Rift Valley, the epic stone ruins couldn't have "picked" a better place to be located. The valley offers miles of hills, valleys, forests and grasslands to explore. The region is also home to seven different villages, making this an area of extreme cultural and natural dynamics.
Albeit beautiful, the terrain in and around Engaruka can be extremely challenging, so travelers should prepare for the elements before they embark on a visit.
