The peculiar fish of the Amazon River

A visit to Brazil's rainforest will likely include a trip down part of the Amazon River. There are many curious mammals to be found in this region, including river dolphins, manatees and capybaras, but some of the most interesting creatures live beneath the water's surface.
The piranha is perhaps the most well known fish to call the Amazon home thanks to its fierce temper and razor sharp teeth. These carnivorous fish are known to prey on the flesh of animals, primarily fish. Travelers who look down into the waters and see a frenzy of movement accompanied by red coloring may be witnessing a school of piranhas feeding - a frightening but fascinating sight.
Electric eels are another creature that lives in the depths of the Amazon river. In fact, these animals are not actual eels, but rather a species of fish. They can grow up to nine feet in length and weigh up to 50 pounds. Furthermore, their body can emit a 650-volt electric shock, which is enough to stun a human.
The tambaqui is a less frightening fish found in this area, but may be of interest to travelers who enjoy dining on sea creatures. These scaly animals are game fish and are heavily harvested by local fishermen .
