While 100,000 images of Buddha can be quite overpowering, the kumbum of Gyantse is only one of this town's many Tibetan relics. From its dynamic mix of residents to its number of sacred spots, this is one town in Tibet that should not be rushed.
The most famous of the spiritual places in Gyantse is its namesake Dzong. Built high above town on a grey hillside, the dzong architecture mimics its mountain's uppermost folds and ridges with its walls. Even those not interested in exploring the site will find the best vistas from this town summit.
Gyantse is also home to a number of relic two and three-story farmhouses that once dominated the rural areas of Tibet.
However, one of the finest offerings that Gyantse provides guests is its population: Both young and old, Chinese and Tibetan - the residents of modern-day Gyantse supports a wide array of the region's transitional and historic offerings.
