Part of Honduras' Bay Islands, Roatan remains the most popular of the island group. While travelers will have to share many of the Roatan's popular sites with other travelers, the island's beloved attractions are held so dearly for a reason.
Exploring Roatan's marine life can be done through a number of ways, each with its own levels of intimacy and physical capabilities needed from the traveler. Guests of all ages can enjoy a glass-bottomed boat tour, which, due to Roatan's crystal clear waters, awards travelers with great up-close glimpses of vivid tropical fish and closer examinations of the island's reef.
Travelers can also embark on submarine adventures offered on Roatan. Featuring bubble-like glass panes aboard the vessels, travelers will come face to face with bioluminescent creatures that live in the dark depths where light is never seen, such as the ghost shark and squat lobster.
Although Roatan is well-known for its marine offerings, the island provides a number of land-based excursions, as well. Back on soil, visitors can mountain bike to the local iguana farm, a local sanctuary for the lizards, or they can hike the 40-plus acres of trails through the pristine forests of the Carambola Botanical Gardens.
