Located in the highlands of Guatemala, Lake Atitlán is one of the most famous natural features in Central America. The enormous body of water is the deepest lake in the region and has a rich cultural history that has made it a popular adventure travel destination.
Lake Atitlán is famous around the globe for its stunning views and pristine water. Formed the crater of a volcano, the lake sits more than a mile above sea level and is 10 miles wide at its largest point. The views from its waters and along the shore are very different depending on where visitors are, but perhaps the most stunning is from the town of Panajachel, where travelers have a breathtaking view of Volcan San Pedro.
Although the views Lake Atitlán are appealing, the lake's historical significance may entice even more people to visit. Most notably, many small villages and towns that exude the Maya culture surround the body of water. There are also several archeological sites including Chiutinamit, where local fishermen discovered remains of an ancient city that could date back as far as 600 B.C.
