Puerto Viejo provides a number of sights and excellent natural landscapes. Although most itineraries often feature Costa Rica's vivacity, one of the best spot to see is the region's beauty in its entirety is Punta Mona, or Monkey Point.
Visitors can make the four-hour trek from Manzanillo to reach Monkey Point, where pristine beaches, fossilized coral and jaw-dropping cliffsides await. While the hike is not for the dainty - most will have to wade through a creek to reach the trail - the small, enclosed area provides those with the heartiness to reach it a spot far and away from the typical traveler's path.
The area is also a popular spot for turtles, so those with a penchant for this large shelled reptile will have no shortage of opportunities to watch the leisurely creatures throughout the day.
Guests with a penchant for green living may want to plan for a longer stay, as the point is also home to an 85-acre permaculture farm and education center. The center provides travelers with a number of classes and workshops that can teach them how to live a more sustainable life.
