Playing to the beat of its own drum, Montezuma is a Costa Rica hot spot ideal for anyone wanting to experience life away from TVs and cellphones.
This small beachside town is proudly laid back: Shops often open and close when they want to, and locals walk with a relaxed pace that is nearly extinct in most modern-day societies. After a few hours walking along the main drag or taking a sandy stroll, most visitors find it easy to assimilate to Montezuma's pace.
While the town has no real tourism office, travelers will find the natural surroundings teem with great adventures. A short day hike through the neighboring jungle will bring travelers to the Montezuma waterfall, a tumbling arc of water elegantly splashing into an alluring green pool below. With local monkeys often spotted in the trees, there are few spots that could be as likened to paradise as this one.
Costa Rica's diverse butterfly population, one of country's most famous attractions, is also highlighted here. Just beyond town is the Mariposa Montezuma Gardens, where delicate winged creatures of various colors float, flap and glide between thick rainforest.
