Tropical importance in La Selva

Costa Rica's number of ecosystems make it one of the most precious parcels of land in the world. Travelers who want to experience more than the country's beauty - and actually want to learn about the area's biology - can head to La Selva Biological Station.
The station is always undergoing research, with some of the more long-term projects including an inventory of the area's arthropod species, as well as research on how volcanic processes affect the local streams.
Because some of the lands in La Selva were once disturbed, tree data is also increasingly important for the scientists and students who work here. Visitors can see the progress of the station's forests by walking through the old growth forest sections of the station and comparing them to the regenerative areas.
Located in the Caribbean lowlands of Costa Rica's northern lands, La Selva borders the Braulio Carrillo National Park, and so provides access to other natural areas. La Selva is also only two hours north of San Jose, and so is an accessible day trip away.
