Found among the Istrian Hills, Motovun is one of Croatia's most famous medieval villages.
Largely influenced by its historic Italian population, about half of Motovun's citizens speak Italian to this day. While the town experienced a large drop in population in the last century, artists have come to fill the spaces left by those who emigrated, making the sheltered village one of Croatia's finest enclaves of world-class art. The town has hosted the Motovun Film Festival since 1999. Welcoming independent films from throughout Europe and the United States, the city is swarmed with film-loving travelers from around the globe.
Motovun proper is a cluster of relic houses, churches and buildings found high above patches of vineyards and wheat fields. While these agricultural assets surrounding the town make for a beautiful landscape, the neighboring forests hold the true treasure of the region: truffles. Istria's delicious truffles are a hidden secret to much of the outside world, so guests who seek out this succulent treat will likely be rewarded. Travelers can often accompany locals in their search for the fungal gold, as they often use specially trained dogs to find these mycorrhizal gems.
