There is certainly no lack of appealing cities in Germany. Berlin, Hamburg and Frankfurt all come to mind, but Munich may be the most intriguing city of all. Known the world over as the main hub of Oktoberfest, Munich has much more to offer than beer. Beautiful parks, a thriving sports culture and a rich history make it hard to deny the appeal of this southern Germany hotspot. With so many attractions, it can be hard to choose where to go, but there are several spots visitors simply can't miss.
Frauenkirche
This famous cathedral is regarded by some to be the main symbol of the city, and given its place in the history of the city it's hard to argue. The enormous building dates back to around 1488 and is truly an impressive structure. The cathedral can fit about 20,000 people and its two spires raise more than 325 feet into the air.
The interior of Frauenkirche is almost as impressive as its outward appearance. Aside from its sheer size, visitors need to check out some of the numerous highlights including the famous "devil's footprint" and artwork that dates as far back as the 14th century.
Nymphenburg Palace
Much like many of the rulers of centuries past, those in Bavaria had an impressive summer home, in this case the Nymphenburg Palace. The sprawling estate is not only appealing to architecture and history buffs, but it's place on a 490-acre park places it in one of the most beautiful areas of the city.
There are plenty of areas in the park for visitors to explore, but some of the most famous spots are its several pavilions, all of which represent different periods of history. For instance, the Badenburg is a baroque pavilion while the famous Amalienburg is built in Rococo style.
Hofbräuhaus am Platzl
It's nearly impossible to talk about Munich without mentioning the famous beer and food, and nowhere is that more true than at Hofbräuhaus am Platzl, one of the largest and oldest beer halls in the world. Though it's at its prime during Oktoberfest, a visit to Munich anytime of the year should be accompanied by a trip to this tourist hotspot.
