All too often, the general population overlooks the appeal of central Europe. Countries such as Poland, Austria and Hungary are just as appealing as the western part of the continent. A large reason for that is Budapest. Located on both sides of the Danube, it is the largest city in Hungary and has plenty to offer adventure travel enthusiasts.
Hungarian Parliament Building
It's not unusual for a country's main legislative building to be an impressive structure, but Hungary's takes it to a whole new level. The largest building in the country, the mammoth structure is a testament to gothic architecture and is arguably the most recognizable landmark in Budapest.
Situated on the banks of the Danube, the building is highlighted by its trademark facade, and while the exterior attracts a lot of attention, one of its features inside - the16-sided central hall - is unquestionably the highlight of the building.
Buda Castle
While the Hungarian Parliament Building may be the biggest in the city, Buda Castle gives it a run for its money. The palace, which was used as the home of Hungarian kings, dates as far back as the 1200s and today is one of the most recognizable sites in the city.
The architecture is likely a large draw, but what's most impressive about Buda Castle is the amount of valuable artwork housed inside its many halls and throughout its ground. For instance, the Matthias Fountain has a place among some of the best sculptures in history. Additionally, the castle is home to the Budapest History Museum, which offers visitors a glimpse at the earliest beginnings of the city.
City Park
There are many impressive buildings throughout Budapest, but that's not all the city has to offer, and City Park is testament to that. Located almost in the center of the city, any visitor should stop by the 302-acre public park.
Walking around the park brings tourists to a many must-see destinations including the Széchenyi Medicinal Bath, the largest of medicinal bath in the continent. Additionally, if travelers make their way to the park during the winter they'll be lucky enough to take advantage of the City Park Pond, which becomes the largest skating rink in Central Europe once it freezes over.
