Close to several ancient Peloponnesian sites, the town of Nafplion is the perfect place to base travels in Greece.
Nafplion was the original capital of Greece after the country's war of independence ended in 1832, due to its strategic location. Remnants of this history are most easily found in the city's three fortresses. The most massive is Palamidi, which sits 708 feet above town on a rocky outcropping. With sights spanning all of Nafplion and its surrounding sea, this is one climb worth far more than its effort. The oldest, yet smaller Akronafplia rises high out of old town, and acts as a fine centerpiece for Nafplion's most historic houses and shops.
With Peloponnesus being the main location for many of Greek's most infamous mythological tales, the city is also home to the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation. Found in a three-story, 18th century home, some of the world's most ancient tales come alive through exhibits filled with traditional Greek costumes and the works of local artists. However, the museum also pays homage to urban societies, especially Nafplion during its time as Greece's capital.
