Kos may be the birthplace of Hippocrates, yet this Greek Island's medicinal qualities are anything but outdated. To experience timeless beauty and a refreshing outdoor atmosphere, travelers should head to Kos while on Greek Island Sailing adventures. Visitors won't be upset they stopped.
Make the climb
As is the case with much of Greece, the island of Kos features a number of lovely hillside villages. While getting to these remote towns may take some effort, a bike ride along the pastoral country roads is a therapeutic and revitalizing journey for any cycling enthusiast.
For travelers looking only for a leisurely ride, the flat agricultural roads on the way to Marmari provide a wealth of sites that won't leave an individual out of breath - although the sights may leave visitors breathless in other ways.
The most epic of sea breezes
Fans of water sports may want to take advantage of Kos's expansive beaches, and we don't just mean sunbathing. Windsurfing is a popular activity and sport across the island, with Lambi Beach, Tingaki and Marmari Beach being some of the most popular spots to experience this sailing/surfing adventure. For seafarers who love the feeling of the wind against their back, there are few spots as exciting as the waters of Kos.
For travelers who would rather stay close to land during their visit, the beach of Therma Loutra, or Thermes, brings a day along the coast to a new level. Home to hot mineral springs that warm the nearby seawater, visitors will likely find it hard not to spend an entire afternoon or day amid these spa-worthy waters.
Where modern medicine began
Physicians today take the Hippocratic oath before beginning their practice, and they may be interested to know Hippocrates himself first worked at a healing center inside a religious sanctuary on this lovely island. Called Asklepion after the god of healing, Asklepios, the center hasn't been active since an earthquake in the year 554 destroyed the sanctuary, but guests will still be able to examine the ancient (yet strikingly ingenious) therapeutic complex. From the remains of Roman-era public baths to temples honoring Asklepios, the site is worth a visit for anyone in the medical field or who is interested in history.
In the town of Kos, visitors can further pay their respects to the "father of modern medicine" by visiting Hippocrates's tree. Standing in front of the Castle of Knights, it is said that Hippocrates once taught under the tree, so travelers may be able to soak in some of his therapeutic wisdom with a visit.
