Borneo named best eco-trip for 2011

Often called the "Island in the Clouds", Borneo was recently named as best eco-trip in 2011 by CNN.com.
Located just north of Australia, Borneo is the third largest island in the world and is divided amongst Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia,
CNN.com reports that the eco-diversity of the island may be in danger since Malaysian officials recently approved the construction of a coal plant in the northern region of Sabah, a premiere destination for adventurers.
Home to the Malaysia's three highest mountains, Sabah is also home to a diverse array of plants and animals. Its lowland jungles, which surround the mountain ranges, are considered rainforests and its coastal shores include a number of smaller islands and coral reefs.
The news agency recommends an eco-friendly tour of Sipadan Island, the most famous island off of Borneo. Here divers can swim among exotic marine life including batfish and the harlequin ghost piefish.
Wildlife lovers can get up close and personal at the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary, a reserve that specializes in the rehabilitation and re-training of animals displaced in the jungle.
Selingan Island is also considered a prime destination in Borneo for its unique wildlife and turtle hatchery. Local officials suggest a day trip to Selingan, since most of the island is restricted.
The best way to go on an eco-friendly trip to Borneo is with a small group of adventure travelers.
