Top explorer looks back on major Antarctica adventure 20 years later

Roughly 20 years ago, top polar adventurer Will Steger completed the first ever dog sled trip across Antarctica.
In 1990, The National Geographic Explorer in Residence led the team of six men and their 42 dogs across the vast continent. It took 7 months to cross the more than 3,400 miles. Steger tells the magazine that travelers looking for the same adventure today will have to take a different path.
With the ever changing climate, dog sleds have not only been banned from Antarctica but many of the glaciers that Steger and his team traveled have partially eroded or no longer exist. In fact, Steger says he began to see a change in temperatures during that trip and has been working ever since to help slow down the effects of glacier erosion through policy change, education and further exploration.
Steger says that he hopes he has empowered more people to care about the condition of the Antarctic Peninsula, and in doing so, also inspired people to follow a path of adventure and empowerment.
When exploring the Antarctic, it’s best way to travel is with a small group of adventure travelers.
