Rome, Italy, might be more known for its ancient sites like the Colosseum than for its live fighting matches. That's because gladiator fights haven't been performed in the capital city for many centuries.
That doesn't mean, however, that travelers can't learn how to be like Russell Crowe in his Oscar-winning role as Maximus from "Gladiator." According to Karen Schaler, an Emmy-winning TV host and author of "Travel Therapy," there are nine cool things to do in Rome that are off the beaten track.
"What better way to learn about ancient Rome and fuel your adventuresome side than to sign up for a few hours of gladiator training?" asks Schaler.
There are six classes to choose from, ranging from the "Murmillo" with their curved shields and swords to the "Hoplomachus" with their small round shield and lance. Even females are offered their own course called "Amazon," based on the women who fought gladiator-style.
This is a unique experience sure to define adventure travel in the city. Forget the Vatican and Spanish Steps, an immersion experience like this is what Rome is all about.
The best way to take a gladiatorial class is with a small group of adventure travelers.
