The Wadi Rum Protected Area is a natural preserve in Jordan. It has been described as the highlight of the country and may hold some of the most beautiful stretches of desert in the world. This location first became famous in the early 20th century through the exploits of Lawrence of Arabia, and still offers plenty of opportunity for adventure travel.
The Bedouins have lived in these deserts for thousands of years, and one tribe, the Huweitat, claims to be descended from the Prophet Muhammad. Groups can experience what it would be like to live a nomadic existence in these arid plains through hiking or even camping out in the Protected Area overnight.
Though Wadi Rum is a desert, it is also the habitat of more than 200 different varieties of animals and a diverse selection of 360 species of plants. Individuals who are interested in adventure travel may enjoy exploring the area on camel or horseback, either alone or on a guided tour.
Wadi Rum is a beautiful and special area that it is best visited with a small group of adventure travelers.
