With a fascinating mix of Moroccan, Spanish and French culture, Tangier is an adventure traveler's paradise.
Located just across the Strait of Gibraltar from Spain, Tangier was under joint international control until 1956. It's easy to get to the Moroccan city by taking a ferry from Spain as it's only 20 miles away.
Walk along the beautiful beach and explore the old city, which features the tomb of Ibn Battuta, a 14th century traveller. Battuta was one of the first famous travelers that documented his adventures around the world.
After that, visit the Tangier American Legation Museum, a cultural center and large library in the middle of the old medina, or city, or Tangier. The museum houses a huge collection of art and historical artifacts along with a tribute to Paul Bowles, a writer and composer, who lived most of his life in Tangier.
Wander through the old medina and wind your way through the narrow walkways of the market of the casa barata. There are plenty of bargins on virtually anything including trinkets, electronics, spices and brasswork. A more local place for a shopping experience, that truly caters to the locals in the area is the souk in the medina.
The best way to explore Tangier is with a small group of adventure travelers.
