Ride the waves in ancient style in Huanchaco

Like many towns in Peru, Huanchaco's history is a long one - habitation of the area dates back more than 3,000 years. While the town is extremely close to a number of archaeological sites, the waters and streets of this coastal town hold many storied secrets as well.
Fishing has been a livelihood for many generations, and is still a booming industry today. One of the most visually stunning components of fishing in Huanchaco is the caballitos del mar, pointy fishing boats that are made from bound torora reeds. These photogenic pieces of craftsmanship are found in few places other than Huanchaco, so visitors with a penchant for the traditional will want to make sure they plan a time to examine these ships while in town.
The history of surfing in Huanchaco has long been debated, yet the thrill of the coastal waves here are hardly worth arguing over. Visitors wanting a chance to catch true experts of the sport can plan their visit to coincide with one of the town's many surf competitions.
Travelers should also make time to visit the artesania market, where locals sell their handicrafts and food in a number of stalls pleasantly arranged near the beach.
