From rails to trails, the number of routes to the epic ruins of Machu Picchu have grown increasingly diverse over the years. Travelers wanting to uncover the roots of Peru on their way to this infamous site, however, should plan their route along the Lares Trek.
The Lares Trek encompasses a multitude of natural and cultural stops. Although challenging terrain, hikers will be able to make many stops along the way in several small Quechua villages. Still rarely visited, travelers will be able to witness these towns as they have been for generations. Villagers still wear the vivid skirts and capes that Peru is known for, and thatched-roof houses are surrounded by herds of llama and alpaca.
Featuring a number of demanding gorges and alluring lagoons, the natural sites along the way remain largely untouched, and travelers will have these remarkable natural playgrounds largely to themselves.
For a different point of view, travelers can indulge in a train trip between Ollantaytambo and Aguas Calientes to reach the storied ruins.
