Sand-bound in Coro

The Parque Nacional Medanos de Coro is known as Venezuela's version of the Sahara Desert. Sitting on the edge of the park, the city of Coro provides gritty journeyers with an urban oasis.
Coro's heat is as strong as, if not stronger than, any other Venezuelan city; however, the near-constant seaside breezes make its temperatures among the most pleasant in the country. The city's relaxed yet intellectual vibe is largely a byproduct of Coro being a university town. With students and professors always around in the city's main square, the city also provides travelers with one of the most intimate ways to learn intriguing facts about the country.
The park is a series of heart-stopping dunes that can be explored on foot or by dune buggy. Wide swaths of gold, grey and sun-yellow sands, occasionally dotted by lush green and brown patches of vegetation, make this quite a vivid landscape that is a great challenge to trek.
Travelers who can't bare the heat can head to the Sierra de San Luis, the mountainous region that also borders Coro. Hidden caves, bountiful rivers and dense forests make this one of the coolest places to escape the high temperatures.
