From Hawaii to Portugal: Five great surfing destinations

Surfing and adventure travel often go hand in hand. Those who are really into the sport often fly thousands of miles to ride some of world's best waves, and they have plenty of spots to choose from. From California and Hawaii to the Atlantic Coast, there are numerous cities famous for their excellent surfing conditions, each offering their own unique appeal.
Encinitas, California
Southern California is well-known for its surf scene, and though there are many cities along the coast that offer some great wave opportunities, few stand above Encinitas. The popular adventure travel destination is ideal for people looking for a low-key spot and there are countless attractions and beaches in the area to stop by and check out.
Among the best-known surfing spots in Encinitas is Swami's, which is often regarded as one of the top places to hang ten in the world. However, it's important to note the reef break is regarded as an experts-only location.
Hanalei, Hawaii
Much like SoCal, few places are more synonymous with surfing than Hawaii - and for good reason. It's hard to go wrong when finding a surfing destination in the Aloha State, but Hanalei may be the best bet.
The most appealing aspect of Hanalei may be the diversity in skill level it offers. Hanalei Pier is ideal for beginners who are just trying to wet their feet in the sport, while there are numerous other options for surfers who can compete at a much higher level.
Kennebunk, Maine
Surfing is certainly not limited to the west coast of the United States, and the Atlantic Ocean has plenty to offer as well. There are many hot spots up and down the East Coast, and Kennebunk is certainly worth checking out. A popular beach town, Kennebunk appeals to surfers of varying degrees of expertise.
Gooch's Beach stands out as one of the more visited surfing destinations in Kennebunk. In addition to being a popular destination for sightseeing and relaxing on the sand, Gooch's Beach also provides easily surfable breaks . And with the beach's renowned clear water, it's ideal for swimming as well.
Algarve, Portugal
There are countless surfing opportunities outside the United States and when it comes to Europe, Portugal is often regarded as the best. The southern region of the Algarve in particular is a great pick.
The beautiful coastal region is a surfing Mecca for a number of reasons. In addition to being a perfect sport for beginners, there is a long list of beaches to choose from to relax on once you've called it a day including the beautiful Praia da Marinha, one of the most iconic beaches in the country.
Fernando de Noronha
Located off the coast of Brazil, this archipelago is an adventure traveler's dream. The islands are home to some of the best waves in the country and the water is among the clearest and warmest in the world. The islands are especially appealing given what they offer outside of surfing. The beaches are popular among travelers for their numerous recreational diving opportunities.
