When people hear "Australia" they think of cosmopolitan cities and warm weather. The truth, however, is that a little less than half of Australia is uninhabitable because it's mostly desert.
That doesn't mean travelers can't explore the desert, however. In fact, one of the best Australian adventures is a camel ride through Broken Hill in New South Wales.
The Living Desert Sanctuary is a gorgeous desolate land filled with miraculous flora and fauna that manages to thrive in this dry, hot climate.
Visitors will wander around what was once the world's largest silver, lead and zinc mine, at a destination known as Silver City.
Today, Broken Hill is famous for its artists who moved there to get inspiration from the vistas that stretch on forever and the clear light that shines down on the desert floor.
True adventure seekers can do an overnight on camelback. Guides will lead travelers to a river where they can watch the sunset and set up camp before night falls. "There is no better way to explore the outback than from the back of a camel," boasts one camel safari website.
The best way to explore the Australian desert is with a small group of adventure travelers.
