Geographically, Dubai and Oman are neighbours, but in terms of character, they couldn’t be further apart. The former, an oil-rich emirate, is known for its glitzy style and over-the-top architecture, while the latter, a paradisaical sultanate, ranks as one of the region’s most relaxed places. What they have in common, though, is centuries of tradition and ample room for adventure: Ancient spice-trading ports, secluded wadis, busy souks and, homestays and camping amid pristine desert sands that stretch to the horizon and beyond. It’s all here, just waiting.
