Starting the trek at over 3,000m above sea level, the Shira route is a challenge for the mind, body and soul. Starting above the treeline on the Shira Plateau, the Shira requires speedy acclimatization but provides four full days through the moorland and alpine desert before the summit. Enjoy the climb across the Shira plateau, into the Great Barranco Valley, and through high alpine deserts as you marvel at views of glaciers, ice fields, and impressive mountain walls—all en route towards your final goal, the Uhuru peak of Mt Kilimanjaro!

Day 1 Arrive Moshi
Arrive at any time.
Day 2 Shira Gate to Shira Plateau to Shira 2 Camp (B,L,D)
Drive to the Shira Gate. Hike across the Shira Plateau to the Shira 2 campsite.
Day 3 Shira Camp 2 to Barranco Camp (B,L,D)
Climb slowly through rocky terrain and ascend the scree to the Lava Tower. Descend into the Great Barranco Valley to the campsite.
Day 4 Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (B,L,D)
Climb the Great Barranco Wall to the Heim Glacier. Continue down into the Karanga Valley's alpine desert to the Karanga Camp.
Day 5 Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (B,L,D)
Trek the Karanga Valley up to Barafu Camp. Prepare for the midnight start of the summit attempt.
Day 6 Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Camp (B,L,D)
At midnight, begin the summit trek. Conquer the rim of the main crater, then cross the scree and snow to Uhuru Peak. Descend to Mweka Hut.
Day 7 Descent - Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi (B,L,D)
Descend the slopes to Mweka Gate and receive a summit certificate. Continue to Mweka village, then Moshi.
Day 8 Depart Moshi (B)
