Days 2-3 Hike the Lycian Way (2B,2D)
This morning, we set off on our two-day village stay. We spend our time hiking through the small villages and stunning scenery of this region while still allowing plenty of time for swimming and enjoying the local cuisine. Start the day with a trek up to the village of Kayakoy, a walk of around 2.5 hours. This old Greek village became a virtual ghost town overnight when in 1923 the Turkish and Greek governments ordered an immediate population exchange. Now preserved as a museum village, it consists of hundreds of rundown but still mostly intact Greek-style houses and churches, which cover a small mountainside. We will take a lunch break here, a great chance to try gözleme, sometimes called "Turkish pancakes", where fresh pastry is rolled out, filled and sealed, then cooked over a hotplate.
In the afternoon we walk for about another 2.5 hours along a path through the pine forest with stunning views, ending at the turquoise Oludeniz lagoon where you can enjoy a refreshing, well-earned swim. We will then drive by private bus to the small local village of Kabak, where we will spend the night. Your accommodation for the next two days, while simple, is always a favourite with our travellers.
The following day we transfer by bus to the village of Ovacık where we continue trekking on the Lycian Way, through typical old Turkish villages to Faralya. We walk approximately 13km (4-5 hours).
After a lunch break in Faralya, our bus will return us to our base at Kabak village where you can spend the remainder of your day relaxing on the beach.
There is also the option today to take a tandem paraglide over Oludeniz- an unforgettable experience. Please let your tour leader know if you are interested in this.
Overnight in Kabak village (2 nights): We stay these nights in very simple twin-share hillside bungalows with sensational beach and mountain views. There are clean shared bathrooms and you will enjoying a home cooked meal of local seasonal dishes (mainly vegetarian) each evening. Drinks are available for purchase.
Estimated travel time: Lycian Way hikes, 5hrs on Day 3; 4-5hrs on Day 4; Oludeniz to Kabak, 30mins (drive); Kabak to Ovacik, 20mins (drive)
Day 4 Saklikent Gorge/Fethiye (B)
After waving goodbye to Kabak village this morning, we start our day with a visit ancient Tlos, spectacularly located on the top of a large hill. Once an important town and one of the main cities of ancient Lycia, Tlos features an ancient theatre, ruined temples and stunning rock tombs, all in a wonderful, tranquil setting.
We take our lunch break near the Saklikent Gorge, the longest and highest gorge in Turkey. Take your pick from the small restaurants with seating areas on wooden platforms just above the river. These are a great place to relax on a Turkish rug under shady trees, perhaps lunching on the local specialty: delicious fresh trout.
In the afternoon we water hike around two kilometres return through the Saklikent Canyon. Please note that this walk is only possible during the summer months when water levels are low.
After a fun and active day, we return to Fethiye where we will spend the night.
