This tiny West African nation is steeped in culture and colonial history. It is believed that voodoo (locally referred to as vodun) originated in Benin and was introduced to the Caribbean and parts of North America by slaves taken from this particular area of the Slave Coast. About 60 percent of the population of Benin practice vodun.
