The ruins of the Poenari Castle was once one of Vlad the Impaler's main fortresses. Vlad III, now often known as Dracula, was known for being particularly cruel, impaling his enemies. He is estimated to have killed over 10,000 people.
The only way to reach the castle is to walk up over 1,400 steps. A third of the castle collapsed down the mountainside in 1888, but the walls and two towers still remain, one of which is said to be where Vlad's first wife threw herself from in order to avoid being captured by the Turks.
