G Adventures' 50 in 5

Together, we can make the world a little more perfect for everyone.

A bold new plan by G Adventures

G Adventures is a social enterprise. For a quarter-century, we’ve used travel as a means to spread good throughout the world, both by introducing curious travellers to their planet in a way they’d never manage on their own, and by helping underserved communities to help themselves.

Over the next five years, G Adventures will raise $5 million to establish 50 new community development projects through the G Adventures 50 in 5 campaign, allowing us to positively impact even more lives. So help us reach our goal, and lets make the world a little more perfect.

Who can you help?

G Adventures has identified five flagship projects to lead the 50 in 5 charge. To be considered, projects must demonstrate both a need for local economic development and evidence of a high volume of travellers to support the initiative. The first five projects will be based in locations as diverse as Colombia, Australia, northern Thailand, and the Galápagos Islands. Future projects are being considered in Kenya, Cuba, Indonesia, the Philippines, and China.

Maasai Clean Cookstoves, Tanzania

Household air pollution through traditional cooking practices over an open-fire stove or inefficient fuel burning stove is the fourth biggest health risk in the world. As their first revenue-generating program in the community, G Adventures has created a community tour that allows travellers to experience both the environment of a boma with and without a clean cookstove. This visit is lead by the women engineer team and our local Maasai partners. Each visit pays for the cost of a new stove in the home that does not have one. The visit also invests in a local community development fund that supports education and health initiatives in each of the villages we visit. A new stove is installed in a family’s boma removes 90% of indoor smoke.

Women on Wheels, Global Program

Around the world, women are under-voiced, face discrimination, and lack opportunities for dignified livelihoods. The global Women on Wheels program will replicate its successful namesake program in India, training women to become drivers for the travel industry, granting them independence and sustainable income while providing safe transport options for female travellers.

Thailand Community Trek, Northern Thailand

Newcomers to tourism, the Red Lahu of Northern Thailand have not benefited from Thailand’s travel trade. By forging new relationships and improving infrastructure, this initiative will create employment opportunities for the young Lahu, helping them escape poverty and generate sustainable income.

Lost City Indigenous Tourism, Colombia

The indigenous communities of Colombia’s Sierra Nevada are among the world’s most isolated. Illegal activity in their region has put them into closer – and often dangerous – contact with the outside world. This initiative will identify opportunities in communities along the Lost City Trek route, connecting them to the travel industry while protecting their heritage and culture.

Aboriginal Training Café, Australia

With few opportunities for work, the youth of Queensland’s Jirrbal people are abandoning their traditional way of life. Funds raised through this initiative will provide youth with training to enter the travel industry, stay closer to home, and preserve ancient traditions for the future.

Community Tourism Program, Galápagos Islands

A sharp increase of day tours to Floreana is putting the small island’s environment at risk. But since most visitors do not overnight on the island, its population has not benefitted from the increased traffic. This project will invest in job training and infrastructure development to create the Galápagos Archipelago’s first community-based tourism program.
