Shiho Fukada

Photojournalist, Director of Photography, Filmmaker

Shiho Fukada is an Emmy-nominated photojournalist, documentary director of photography, and filmmaker with global reporting experience. Shiho has photographed, filmed, produced and directed stories for National Geographic, The New York Times, CNN, BBC, PBS, NPR and Hulu, among others. Her work is guided by a commitment to journalistic ethics and a sensitivity to her subjects, allowing her to create intimate images and access underreported stories.

She has served as a jury member for the World Press Photo contest in the Asia Pacific and Oceania region, as well as POY Asia. She has received grants from the Alicia Patterson Fellowship, the International Women’s Media Foundation, and the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting. She began her career as a news photographer in New York before focusing on Asia, living in Beijing and Tokyo, and contributing to major news outlets. Her coverage of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake won the Grand Prize for Photo of the Year from Editor & Publisher Magazine. Her work on the 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami earned The Visa d'Or - Daily Press Award and the Society of Publishers in Asia’s News Photography Award. Her multimedia project Japan's Disposable Workers won a World Press Photo award and was nominated for an Emmy. She also received the Feature Photography Award from the Overseas Press Club of America for her reporting on elderly Japanese women in prison.

Her work often explores themes of loneliness and its connection to socio-economic issues. She enjoys both city life and nature, splitting her time between Tokyo and Los Angeles.
