Olivier Nsengimana

National Geographic Explorer, Wildlife Veterinarian, Conservationist

A National Geographic Explorer and recipient of the National Geographic Buffett Award for Leadership in Conservation in Africa, Olivier Nsengimana is a Rwandan wildlife veterinarian and award-winning conservationist. As the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Rwanda Wildlife Conservation Association (RWCA), he has dedicated over a decade to safeguarding Rwanda’s most threatened wildlife, habitats, and natural ecosystems.

Olivier is best known for designing a landmark conservation initiative that saved the endangered Grey Crowned Crane from extinction in Rwanda. Working alongside local communities and government partners, his team successfully removed all captive cranes in the country, restored crucial wetland neighbours and habitats, and established a nationwide protection network. Under his leadership, the population of cranes has nearly tripled.

A graduate of the University of Rwanda who holds a master’s degree in Conservation Medicine from the University of Edinburgh, Olivier combines rigorous veterinary science with community-led stewardship. His approach relies on hundreds of local Community Conservation Champions who empower rural populations to protect biodiversity while building sustainable livelihoods.

Recognized globally for his pioneering work, Olivier has received prestigious honours including the 2014 Rolex Award for Enterprise, the 2019 Future for Nature Award, and the 2025 Whitley Gold Award.
