Hokkaido doesn't do quiet. Trekking north from Shiretoko's untamed coastlines to Daisetsuzan's volcanic peaks, this trip covers Japan's second-largest island the way it deserves: on foot, over ridgelines, through the country's finest national parks. Sore legs get their reward each evening in steaming onsens, with a well-earned pint waiting in Sapporo, where Japan's oldest beer began.
